Yishun

Yishun’s Great Outdoors Allows Residents To Enjoy Area’s Natural Environment

Yishun, once the home pineapple and pepper plantations, is enveloped by the “Great Outdoors.” The 180,000+ residents who live here can enjoy the naturalness of the area and Yishun Town Garden, Yishun Park and Yishun Pond.

People who want to find an affordable place to live - a location that offers comfort and convenience –don’t need to look any further than Yishun. What all does this town have to offer residents?

It’s important to note that Yishun saw much of its development occur in the 1980s, with the first flats built in the Chong Pang subdivision. In September 2007, the Remaking Our Heartland program tapped it for revitalization, having since endured changes that boost positive living and lifestyles.

Yishun’s Residential Life

Yishun was divided into nine subdivisions – Khatib, Lower Seletar Reservoir, Nee Soon, Northland, Springleaf, Yishun Central, Yishun East, Yishun South, and Yishun West. No matter what subdivision you choose, you’ll have different housing options to pick from, including private or public housing.

There are many HDB flats of various sizes, shapes, ages and prices, making it easy for prospective homebuyers to find a place that’s right for them and their family. HDB is also working on building more Built-to-Order (BTO) flats. Many condos are available for people looking for private housing – Eight Courtyards, Euphony Gardens and Orchid Park Condominium, to name a few. More condos are slated to be developed, and near many amenities and facilities residents need and want.

If you want something a bit more private, you can also check out any of the available landed properties.

Since families are moving into the area, the community needs schools. Yishun offers many well-known and reputable schools – primary, secondary and higher education. For parents looking for a high-quality education for their child(ren), Yishun offers many schools, including but not limited to:

  • Primary Schools – Ahmad Ibrahim Primary School, Chongfu Primary School, Huamin Primary School and Jiemin Primary School
  • Secondary Schools – Ahmad Ibrahim Secondary School, Northbrooks Secondary School, Northland Secondary School and North View Secondary School
  • Higher Education – ITE College Central, SAF Education Center and Yishun Junior College

As with any town in Singapore, health care is a necessity. This is why Yishun has two hospitals for its residents to use – Tan Tock Seng Hospital and the newer Khoo Teck Puat Hospital (established in 2010).

Religion is also an essential part of Yishun living. This is why the area is home to many places of worship for all religions, such as Church Of Our Lady Star Of The Sea, Masjid Darul Makmur and Wan Sua Keng Temple.

Amenities and Entertainment

Yishun is not short on entertaining amenities – for indoor and outdoor fun. Yishun residents can do a lot of things in their downtime, from watching movies at the local theater to dining at fancy restaurants to relaxing in the park. Whatever you could want to do, Yishun may have just what you are looking for.

Some residents may like to do a day of shopping. Yishun has many malls to spend time window shopping and buying what you want and need. Northpoint Shopping Center has been expanded to meet residents’ needs, including a bookstore, supermarket and various restaurants. It’s also home to a library and furniture store (Harvey Norman).

Since Yishun is broken down into smaller neighborhoods, each one offers a neighborhood center that includes supermarkets, convenience stores and coffee shops.

Other shopping centers that residents can visit include Sun Plaza and Sembawang Shopping Center.

Yishun offers many active and relaxing amenities for residents to enjoy. If you’re an active person, who loves to spend your time exercising or playing sports, the town has two country clubs – Orchid Country Club and SAFRA Yishun Country Club.

  • At SAFRA Yishun Country Club, residents can have fun on the rock climbing wall.
  • At Orchid Country Club, residents have the option to have a paintball war.

It’s not uncommon for residents to have staycations and come here for their downtimes.

Yishun has several other community clubs for residents to enjoy – with several offering martial arts to those interested in learning the skill. If you want to watch a movie, the Golden Village community offers a Cineplex worth checking out.

Yishun also has a Stadium, Sports Hall and Swimming Complex that will allow people to become active and get healthy. Whenever you decide it’s time to get active and healthy, Yishun has the facilities for residents to do just that.

If you’re more into relaxing or need a break from the active, busy life, Yishun has many parks, with the two largest being Lower Seletar Reservoir Park and Yishun Park. You can also spend a day at the Yishun Community Library, reading books and relaxing.

Yishun has plenty of restaurants and hawker centers to eat at – with cuisines from around the world that are sure to please the taste buds.

If you are craving for hawker center food, you should visit 928 Yishun Laksa. It is the most popular place in Yishun at affordable prices. You should also try the famous 925 Yishun Chicken Rice. If you enjoy burgers, why not try one with a Singaporean twist. BurgerUp allows its customers to customize their burgers to fit their liking.

Other restaurants you can try include:

  • Bistro Delifrance Restaurant
  • Crown Palace Restaurant
  • Sakae Sushi Restaurant
  • Pin Si Restaurant
  • Nakhon Kitchen

If you’re craving sweet foods, the Holy Cow Cream offers ice cream and waffles. With Doughwory Bakery, you can check out a vast array of pastries. Both cafés are well-known for their foods, but just as known for their drinks.

Interesting Tidbits

  • Yishun’s name came from the Mandarin translation of Nee soon or pineapple king.
  • The ROH program revitalized Yishun Park, creating Yishun Pond Park and built a three-story lookout tower with a winding ramp that goes to a viewing deck to get an amazing view of Yishun Central.
