Before Jurong West became the industrial and investment magnet it is today; it was a crocodile-filled swampland with low hills and thick jungle. It’s an area in Singapore that continues to grow every year, with more residential properties and commercial industries moving into the area. Millions of visitors come here to check out what Jurong West has to offer. 

More than 250,000 residents live in Jurong West, and the demand for affordable, sustainable, high-quality property is on the rise. This is partly due to the Urban Redevelopment Authority’s plan to convert parts of Jurong West’s residential communities into commercial hubs away from the Central Business District. 

Jurong West has been broken down into nine subzones – Boon Lay, Central, Chin Bee, Hong Kah, Kian Teck, Taman Jurong, SAFTI, Yunnan and Wenya. Jurong West residents have plenty of transportation options to choose from, including the rails, buses, taxis and private cars, making it easy for them to get from home to school/work to the numerous entertainment venues, supermarkets and restaurants.

Starting in the 1970s, Jurong West was inclusive of people that did not include workers and their families, which has led to the development of the numerous estates that have been built, such as the Boon Lay Glad and Jurong West Jewel. Today, multiple condos dot the land that includes The Floravale, Lakeville Condo and Lakeshore Condominium.  The area also includes some incorporated residential projects as well.

Since more and more people with families are moving in, education becomes a real necessity. And, when it comes to education, Jurong West has answered the call. Residents have numerous options to choose from – ranging from pre-schools to higher-education schools. Some of the many schools offered in Jurong West are:

The area is also home to several international schools. For example, the Canadian International School is regarded as Singapore’s best international schools. However, the One World International School offers education from pre-school through higher education.

Students, as well as the public, have two local public libraries the National Library Board administers – Jurong West Public Library and Jurong Regional Library. 

 

Jurong West Offers Plethora of Entertainment and Fun

Jurong West is full of things to see and do – from playgrounds and parks to shopping and dining. The idea was to create a sense of community. So, if you consider shopping to be a must, there are many to choose from – Gek Poh Shopping Mall, Jurong Point Shopping Center, Pioneer Mall and Taman Jurong Shopping Center.  

Most people head to the Taman Jurong Shopping Center for the affordable deals they have to offer on clothes, shoes, bags, etc. The NTUC Fairprice center is a kid-friendly location with its numerous kid-entertainment stores, with some offering gag products like a fake cockroach or whoopee cushion.  

Jurong Point mall is the largest shopping mall in Singapore, with a plethora of storefronts that could leave you broke if you’re not mindful of your spending. 

There is certainly no shortage of fun things to do in Jurong West. Due to initially being a rural location, parks were set up to house wildlife. Today, the only thing that remains of these parks is the Jurong Bird Park, but with more residential developments on the horizon, this may soon perish as well. 

However, the area’s wildlife can be seen at Jurong Central Park. Being a wetland, Jurong West has plenty of native flora and fauna, including butterflies, frogs and insects. Life-sized board games, like Ludo, Snakes ‘n’ Ladders and dice tower can also be found here. This is a very popular attraction for everyone, regardless of age. 

Of course, residents can also check out the Jurong Lake Gardens, Palm View Garden and Yunnan Park. Along with parks include the community centers of Jurong Green Community Club, Gek Poh Community Center and Jurong Springs Community Club. There are also community organized activities and sightseeing tours. 

Jurong West’s dining options are vast – from your typical fast food options to more exotic restaurants. If you’re in the mood for fast food, there is Burger King, McDonald’s, KFC and Subway. If you want something a bit more local, there are Boon Lay Raja Restaurant, Hwa Keat Eating House.

In Boon Lay Place Food Village, there is the Heng Huat, which is well-known for its boneless duck noodles. At 2211 Mookata, a popular spot for NTU students, you can try any of the meat, seafood and vegetables that have been marinated in the stall’s signature marinade. 

The food center has many options to choose from – Traditional Hakka Lui Cham, Bukit Timah Fried White Carrot Cake and Na Bao Wan.

Jurong West is slightly removed from all the action in Jurong East, but people still think of it as the “Orchard Road of the West.” It’s just not as lively as its eastern counterpart, and home prices are therefore a bit lower, making this a more affordable choice for people looking for a home in the West. 

Residents of Jurong West are not far from Clean Tech Park, the National Institute of Education, Tukang Innovation Park, Nanyang Technological University, Wenya Industrial Estate and the Tuas industrial area.
