Choa Chu Kang Life Gives Nod To Its Past With Nostalgic Designs and Motifs

Choa Chu Kang, which stands for the Teochow word “kang chu,” is home to roughly 169,000 HDB residents. The town was initially a rural settlement for Chinese immigrants during the early 19th century. Its river banks were planted with peppers and gambier. Today, Choa Chu Kang offers nostalgia with its design features and motifs among the modern conveniences of a busy lifestyle. 

 

Choa Chu Kang Residential Living Necessities and Amenities 

Choa Chu Kang, located in western part of Singapore, is made up of seven neighborhoods that include but are not limited to Teck Whye, Yew Tee, etc. The town offers many amenities for residents to enjoy, such as shopping malls, libraries, community clubs, movie cinemas, parks, etc. 

Many of the HDB flats built in Choa Chu Kang are four-or five-bedrooms, but some executive flats are available for those looking and even two and three-bedrooms for those who don’t need anything fancy or big.

Although the neighborhood is relatively new, it’s the site of many families with children and oozes convenience. As such, the area offers many schools for the children to attend:

  • Primary – Choa Chu Kang Primary School, Teck Whye Primary School and Yew Tee Primary School
  • Secondary – Bukit Panjang Government High School, Choa Chu Kang Secondary School and Teck Whye Secondary School
  • Higher-Education – ITE College West, Pioneer Junior College and SHATEC Institutes 

Health is an important thing for all beings, and the Choa Chu Kang community has three healthcare facilities for residents to visit. If you need a doctor for any reason, you can visit the Evercare Medical Clinic or Choa Chu Kang Polyclinic. If you have a more serious condition or have been severely injured, there is St. Luke’s Hospital where your needs can be taken care of. 

Religion is important for many Choa Chu Kang residents. No matter if you are Christian, Buddhist, Muslim or whatever, there is always a church that you can attend. Some of these include Grace Christian Center, Kuan Hoon Dian Chinese Temple and Masjid Al-Khair.

Choa Chu Kang has many things people can see, do and enjoy – all connected by various transportation modes, including trains, buses, taxis, etc. No matter what a person wants to do, there is a way to get there beyond walking.  

Shopaholics can enjoy Choa Chu Kang’s primary shopping mall – Lot One, located by the Choa Chu Kang MRT and LRT and bus interchange. What makes this mall so worthwhile is the number of amenities it has to offer beyond clothes and other stores. Lot One has a movie theater, library and a grocery store (along with other food stores that you can visit). ALso, Choa Chu Kang offers residents plenty of great shopping at Bukit Panjang Plaza, Fajar Shopping Centre, and Hillion Mall. There are also a lot of amenities close by that residents routinely enjoy. 

If you’re one to stay away from the larger crowds, you can visit other shopping centers such as the Choa Chu Kang shopping center, Sunshine Place, Yew Tee Square, Limbang Shopping Center, to name a few. There are many places in Choa Chu Kang that you can find your necessities. 

When it comes to enjoyable downtime that doesn’t involve shopping, you have many choices. Again, there is the Lot One mall where you can watch movies at the cinema or check out the library. 

There are not many farms remaining in Singapore, but Choa Chu Kang does have a goat farm called Hay Diaries. The farm allows visitors and larger groups to come see and try milking the goats for themselves. 

There are also many parks throughout the area, which allows people to get in some exercise. 

Choa Chu Kang Park is a must-be-place-to-go on the weekends, as it lets people enjoy time in nature, walking through what’s left of the old fruit tree plantations. The park has a number of fitness stations for workout enthusiasts and a small skate park for the kids to enjoy.

The Mega Playground is a family-friendly place in the park where children can get out all their energy. However, Mega Playground isn’t just for the youngsters. There is also a street soccer corner, badminton court, basketball court and elderly fitness corner. 

Choa Chu Kang is also a great place for fitness enthusiasts with its sports and swimming complex and Choa Chu Kang Stadium. The sports complex offers its residents classes for Zumba and K-Pop dance. 

Residents can also enjoy the Yew Tee Community Club and Warren Country and Golf Club.

When it comes to food, Choa Chu Kang offers a variety of foods from various parts of the world, including from the West and East. For example, there is the Siam Kitchen and Old Chang Kee, along with Long John’s Silver. The Choa Chu Kang Crescent offers a delicious Ah Boy Chicken Rice while the BBQ Sambal Stingray is a delight at the Choa Chu Kang Park. The Gardensia Bistro offers some tasty Asian fushion dishes like the Hokkien Mee Pasta.

  • Singapore’s one and only burial ceremony is in Choa Chu Kang.
  • The last known tiger in Singapore was seen in Choa Chu Kang before it was shot in the 1930s.
  • Choa Chu Kang’s name is in reference to the Chinese immigrants known as Kang Chu, kang meaning river and Chu meaning the clan name of the first headsman over the plantations.

Residents of Choa Chu Kang live close enough to Bukit Panjang that they can use all the amenities at both non-mature estates. The connectivity is great, as it’s only a short bus or LRT ride away.  

The average HDB resale flat price for a 4-room unit in Choa Chu Kang is a little less than a unit of the same size in Bukit Panjang, which is why many people choose to buy in Choa Chu Kang. Both estates are basically in the same location, so it only makes sense. 

Residents of Choa Chu Kang can get around easily via the Downtown Line and/or LRT. But many of them have jobs nearby at the Mandai Industrial Estate or in Sungei Kadut at the International Furniture Park, which allows them to avoid a long commute.
