How Bedok Became One of Singapore's Largest Districts To Offer Executive and Other Residential Homes and Amenities

Where the Bedok neighborhood proudly stands was once home to coconut plantations. This eastern Singapore region is one of the country's largest districts but is broken down into eight subzones. These subzones include:

  • Bayshore
  • Bedok North
  • Bedok Reservoir
  • Bedok South
  • Frankel
  • Kaki Bukit
  • Kembangan
  • Siglap

Each subzone consists of large residential facilities with a copious number of amenities to enjoy. Most of the area's residents live in the very affordable Bedok New Town public housing.

 

How Bedok Became Bedok

Bedok is thought to be the Malay derivative of bedoh, which stands for very large drum that is sounded five times to summon people to mosques for the daily prayers. The Bedok name has been around since Sir Stamford Raffles time. 

This town of approximately 195,000 citizens was first planned out in 1963, which is when the Housing Development Board (HDB) took control of the area to excavate it. It's since transformed into an eclectic town that's a mix of nature and modern conveniences. These revamp, including Bedok Integrated Transport Hub, Bedok Interchange Hawker Centre and Bedok Mall, were a part of the Remaking Our Heartland program.

 

Bedok's Residences and Its Educational System

The Housing and Development Board (HDB) oversaw the development of 58,000 units in Bedok New Town. There were different layouts for the flats, but most were either three or four-rooms. However, the HDB also had built about 27,000 executive and Housing and Urban Development Corporation flats, which is home to 200,000 residents. These investments are a big reason people are flocking to Bedok. 

There are four primary schools – Bedok Green Primary School, Changkat Primary School, Saint Anthony's Canossian Primary School and Temasek Primary School. There are also four secondary schools for them to move up to. Once graduation is seen from there, young adults have their choice of higher educational learning from six colleges/universities:

  • ITE College East
  • Kuroda
  • Singapore Institute of Commerce
  • Temasek Junior College
  • Tampines Junior College
  • Victoria Junior College

Students (and members of the public) can check out the Bedok Public Library, which is located near Bedok MRT Station and Bedok Bus Interchange. It's got a plethora of books and resources. It's also the home of the vast collection of Malay print and non-print library materials of all Singapore's National Library Board libraries. 

 

Bedok's Must-See Places To Enjoy For Entertainment, Food and Activities

Bedok offers attractions that everyone should check out. For example, the Bedok Reservoir was developed from the country's "earth for the sea" reclamation work that involved deep excavation. It's seen as a place to get away from the business of the town. 

The Bedok Integrated Complex is another must-see, go-to-enjoy place. It's home to the Kampong Chai Chee Community Club, Bedok Polyclinic, Bedok Public Library, Bedok Sports Center (swimming complex, tennis center and sports hall), etc. 

Bedok residents can now enjoy the Outdoor Play Corridor, which includes dedicated pedestrian and cycling paths connecting the town center and the Bedok Reservoir Park.

Residents of Bedok can check out the many different offerings the town has to offer. It offers two shopping centers, an array of restaurants, three community centers, places to pray – Lutheran Church, Masjid Al Ansar and Tan Ah Lik Temple – and three hospitals to receive care in.  There are so many things this town has to offer that there is always something of interest available. 

The number of restaurants the area has to offer is vast, as is their offerings. These restaurants include:

  • Choc.a.bloc
  • To-gether Cafe
  • Foo House

There is also hawker fare offered on the streets of the town, which includes Fishball Noodles, Roast Duck Rice and Friend Carrot Cake. Bedok 85 has come up with dishes such as Hokkien Prawn Mee, BBQ Stingray, Fried Oyster and Pork Porridge, etc. There is also the FatCat Ice Cream Bar, which is famous for its Charcoal Waffles with Salted Egg Yolk Sauce 

In 2011, the ROH announced plans to make changes to the Bedok Town Center, which have come to fruition. Thus, making Bedok a must-see, must-live area for many Singaporeans. With the ability to move from place to place easily, thanks to the numerous transportation options (train and bus), Bedok is growing by leaps and bounds.

Bedok is an extremely popular mature town bustling with activity. Residents enjoy an assortment of amenities, including wonderful restaurants and eateries, great schools, and educational institutions as well as excellent connectivity. The average price of an HDB resale flat is generally higher than prices of comparable units in non-mature estates, with the exception of Punggol. However, these prices are considered mid-range compared to similar units in many other mature estates.

Residents of Bedok are in a great location, near the airport, which has a lot of restaurants and retail shops and close to the beautiful East Coast Park and Bedok Reservoir. In terms of connectivity, Bedok has the new Thomson-East Coast Line and of course the Downtown Line for transporting residents wherever they need to go.
