Ang Mo Kio

Ang Mo Kio Creates A "Live, Work, Learn and Play" Atmosphere To Take Singapore Into The Future

Ang Mo Kio is Singapore's seventh new town that offers a plethora of amenities that foster the "live, work, learn and play" atmosphere. With nearly 144,000 residents, the town has grown significantly to become a sprawling urban economic center that has ensured its status as a leading residential estate in the country.

Ang Mo Kio means "red-haired man's bridge," which is a reference to Caucasians and the Kallang River Bridge. The area, which was mostly desolate during the first half of the 20th century, saw its growth happen during the 1970s. Since that time, the area responsible for introducing the town council concept was considered the pilot project in the late 1980s.

In the 1980s, the town gained notoriety. The first was for its design when the Singapore Institute of Architects presented it with the Outstanding Buildings Award in 1983. Three years later, its swimming complex was presented with the SIA's Architectural Award in 1986.

Ang Mo Kio's Residential Complexes and Its Educational and Religious Facilitates

Today, it offers residential properties that meet its residents' continually changing needs and helps the town grow. For example, Ang Mo Kio Court is a BTO development set up in 2016, being the first to offer Three-Generation flats. The 3-G flats were developed to help multi-generational families with their elderly members.

Ang Mo Kio has a mixture of both old and new flats, such as the traditional 12-storey-long blocks style that can be accessed through a common hallway or 25-storey-long blocks with four units on each floor.  These flats pale in comparison to the newer flats in terms of height. Still, there are currently several private residential developments happening in the neighborhood, including bungalows, semi-detached homes and shophouses.

Ang Mo Kio offers both primary and secondary schools, along with tertiary courses at its universities, providing children and young adults with the education necessary to be productive members of the Ang Mo Kio community.

For younger children, the primary schools they can attend include the Ang Mo Kio Primary School, Jing Shan Primary School and Mayflower Primary School. Older children will attend any of the four schools – Anderson Secondary School, Ang Mo Kio Secondary School, Mayflower Secondary School and Peirce Secondary School.

Young adults looking to further their education can join any of the three tertiary institutions – Anderson Junior College, IT College West (located in the Ang Mo Kio area) and Nanyang Polytechnic.

There are also special schools to help with intellectual disabilities such as autism, Down's syndrome, etc.

Worshipping is also a must for many families. And the Ang Mo Kio sect offers several places where families enjoy religious ceremonies. These places include Mount Olives Church of God, Masjid Ai-Muttagin and The Swee Kow Kuan Temple.

Activities and Entertainment

Ang Mo Kio has multiple sub-zones for easier planning and development of residential, commercial and social sects. These sub-zones include but are not limited to:

  • Ang Mo Kio Town Centre
  • Cheng San
  • Kebun Baru
  • Sembawang Hills
  • Seletar
  • Yio Chu Kang

In the Ang Mo Kio Town Centre, residents can partake in numerous activities such as restaurants, retail, entertainment complexes, clubs and churches/religious organizations. Such places residents can enjoy a bite to eat include the Jack's Place restaurant, Gim Tim Restaurant, McDonald's, KFC and other well-known establishments.

For those individuals looking for things to do, there is the Ang Mo Kio Community Centre and Swimming Complex, the Yio Chu Kang Sports Hall and Community Club, Ang Mo Kio Community Library and Cathay Cineplex, The Grassroots' Club and Eng Wah Jubilee Cinema Hall.

A popular destination in Ang Mo Kio is its circular point block, which is located at the town's entrance along Upper Thomson Road. It's the only block to offer this feature – a highlight that distinguishes it from other Singapore communities.

How Ang Mo Kio Helps Singapore To Reach Its Goal

Another fantastic aspect of the community is that it'll be the first walking and cycling town in Singapore's transformation to become a car-lite country.

And although Singapore aims to be a pedestrian-friendly country, there are still many transportation options for residents to use, such as city buses, taxis/hired cars and the MRT stations (Yio Chu Kang MRT Station and Ang Mo Kio MRT Station). These options allow residents to get from one location to another fairly quickly.

Ang Mo Kio is well-known for its caring community and close-knit family ties. It offers homes and other residences that cater to multi-generational families and single-families with schools that a second-to-none and has ample activities for everyone – residents and visitors – to partake in and enjoy.

Ang Mo Kio is quickly becoming the community leader in Singapore's future!

Ang Mo Kio is one of the more expensive areas because it’s centrally located, while still being in the heartland. It has great schools, including Nanyang Polytechnic and Anderson Secondary School, and others. It is also blessed with nice restaurants, good connectivity, and many other amenities.

While you’ll generally pay more in Ang Mo Kio for a 4-room HDB resale flat than you would in a non-mature estate, you’ll find it’s less than you would pay for the same size resale flat in non-mature Punggol, and less than you would pay for HDB resale flats in Queenstown, Toa Payoh and other mature towns.

The 2019 URA Masterplan shows that people buying in Ang Mo Kio can expect more conveniences in terms of transportation with new stations being built on the Cross Island Line as well as the Thomson-East Coast Line. Plans are also in the works for a beautiful nature trail as part of the Thomson Nature Park, a cycling network spanning 16km in length, the North/South Corridor and more.
