District 16
Bedok, Upper East Coast
District 16 is primarily made up of residential properties in Bedok and along Upper East Coast Road. There are a number of high-rise apartment buildings and HDB flats competing for the best ocean view. You will also find private homes located in quieter areas away from the bright lights of the city. Residents frequent Bedok Mall, Bedok Point, the Crescendo Building and Siglap Shopping Centre for their shopping and commercial needs.
Bedok
The name Bedok comes from “bedoh,” a Malay word for a drum made from a hallowed out log. This was the type of drum that alerted crowds to come to the mosque for prayers. Bedok is among the earliest native places in Singapore, dating back to Sir Stamford Raffles as seen in the first map drafted in 1828 of Singapore Island. The Bedok New Town was developed in 1973 and the area was paved with new roads, including Bedok Heights, Bedok Highway, and Bedok Plain. In 1979 New Upper Changi Road was completed at a time when a lot of major changes were being made in the area.
Today, District 16 is populated with a mix of both locals and foreigners and is known for all the food and beverage outlets catering to a broad range of taste buds. These eateries offer everything. If you like western food, you can get it at Etna Italian Restaurant. For tasty Asian dishes, you can go to the Megumi Japanese Restaurant and to the Deli Turk Turkish Cuisine for Middle Eastern food.
Upper East Coast
Americans and others who like living on the East Coast and the water sports available at the East Coast Sports Club have inspired developers to undergo several residential projects in the area. These include the Urban Vista located where the Tanah Merah Kechil Link joins New Upper Changi Road. This complex has 582 units with prices starting at S$1,350 psf. Another residential development by Far East Organization is called eCO because it is an eco-friendly project with an eco-stream and a rain garden. It also has community gardens available to residents who want to grow their own herbs, fruits, and vegetables.
